Thrifty Thursday: "Estate Sale" Freebies (Part I)

Last week Sharlene, a close friend of my mother's, who had been battling cancer, passed away.

She had little family left, so my mother had been acting as her power of attorney for quite some time. As she was in Hospice, it had been decided that an estate sale should be held to clean out her house and make a little extra money for her care.

Unfortunately, she passed away barely a week after the decision had been made to do so.

As the estate sale never happened, it was decided to donate the contents of the house to the local Salvation Army, but anyone who knew her could come in and see if there was anything they wanted first.

Since I had helped out with the selling items before her passing to help pay for her care, I was invited to come and take a look around.

It was a little morbid to be poking around in someone's house after their death, and I kept asking my mother and Sharlene's cousin, "Are you sure you're okay with me taking this? There isn't another family member who wants it?" but in the end I ended up with some pretty awesome stuff.

I gotta hand it to Sharlene, she had some kind of great taste. We all know that I love vintage items, so I ended up with quite a few amazing vintage items that I never would have been able to afford (on my broke college student budget) otherwise!

In the end, I came home with wayyy too many items to photograph and do write ups about by today, so I'll be doing this in installments. First up - some of those awesome vintage pieces!

The first pieces of vintage Pyrex I saw were these two fridge containers. I nearly had a stroke! And then I found all the rest...

Red and orange bowls in 3 different sizes....

And another yellow and orange bowl. Love!
Then there was all of the vintage glassware. I feel in love with these orange canisters immediately (I'm really loving orange lately, which is so weird for me). The largest has a pretty big piece missing out of the bottom along the seam, so I won't really be able to store anything small in there. But, I'm sure I will find another way to make use of it!

This measuring cup and gorgeous deviled egg serving tray will be used often!

Believe it or not, I don't own a cake carrier. Gasp! I have 3 cupcake carriers, but not one single cake carrier. Well, I guess I actually can't say that anymore - now can I? :)

This chrome (plastic) Sunbeam mixer is my favorite item of Day 1. I didn't need another mixer (I still have my "Ice Blue" KitchenAid) but I just fell in love with this. And the best part - it works! I haven't used it to make anything yet, but I turned it on and tried out all of the various settings and whatnot. Sigh.

Stay tuned for the next installment of "Estate Sale" Freebies!

  1. My jaw was literally on the floor as I was reading this. That is definitely a once in a lifetime chance! Although I do get the guilty feeling you might have had while selecting what you would keep. You can take comfort in knowing you are giving it a good home instead of it sitting on the shelves of a dusty thrift store :)

"Stalking" your blog from Peacoats and Plaid. Now following, I think you might be one of my new favs! Plus, VintPrint is also doing my blog makeover currently :D

    1. Just wait until the next installment! I got some amazing vintage clothing and jewelry (nothing too valuable, but fun!) as well as furniture and all sorts of other stuff. She was a really awesome lady with great/funky taste, and I know I'll cherish these items for years to come :)

And thank you so much for stopping by! Meg at VintPrint does a great job, and she was such a pleasure to work with. I'm sure your makeover will be fantastic!

  2. A very similar circumstance happened to me and I ended up with such cherished items that makes me think of the original owner every time I see/use my newly acquired gifts. I think she would have loved knowing her stuff was going to homes that loved her.

    1. I absolutely agree :) I'm sure she'd much rather people she knew have those items than some stranger pay $1 for it in a thrift shop (although the proceeds would go to a worthy cause).

  3. I'm sorry to hear about your mother's friend. May she rest in peace. I'm sure she would have been glad to know that the stuff she loved was going to a loving home. Every single one of those items are great pieces. Enjoy them. :)
